Oldest Building in Town Serves Breakfast Again
After years standing empty, 47 Main Street South is a diner, a bakery and an ice cream shack — all at once.
Hugh Galbraith put this building up in 1870, and for most of the 156 years since, it has been feeding people. A dairy operated here from 1936, with milk delivered door to door by horse and wagon. By 1961 the town knew it as McCrone's Dairy Bar. For a generation after that, it was Marie's Village Inn.
Then it sat empty. Joshua and Justine Tuck took possession one day after their son was born and spent months of fourteen-hour days putting it back together. Local tradespeople, retirees and neighbours turned up to help — which is why the restoration is better described as a community project than a renovation.
The ice cream shack opened first, introducing the town to the property while the rest was finished. The grand opening followed on 25 July 2026, and the response was well beyond what the Tucks expected: dining rooms filling at breakfast, lunch and dinner, with the bakery and creamery busy alongside.
The ambition was never simply to run a restaurant. It was to give people a reason to come downtown — the way they already do in Elora or Hockley Valley.
